The vivid orange-yellow synthetic dye behind a lot more on the shelf than most shoppers realize. Officially named FD&C Yellow No. 6. Chemically: Sunset Yellow FCF, an azo dye. Industrially: the orange in many of the snack foods, condiments, and beverages that have built their visual identity on that exact shade.

And yes, often in the relish.

Most jarred sweet pickle relish on US grocery shelves uses Yellow 6 (often blended with Yellow 5) to hit that uniform bright-yellow-orange. Heinz Sweet Relish. Vlasic Sweet Relish. Mt. Olive. The label-line reads "Yellow 6" or "FD&C Yellow No. 6," sometimes alongside Yellow 5.

The cucumber-tartness is real. The color is not.

The same dye carries the orange in many Cheetos, Doritos, Cheez-It, certain orange sodas, candy coatings, and macaroni-and-cheese products that have not yet reformulated. Some brands have already moved. PepsiCo's Simply line (Simply Cheetos, Simply Doritos) uses natural color systems including annatto and paprika oleoresin instead of Yellow 6. Bubbies and many of the artisan / fermentation-first relish brands have been clean-color from inception. Several store-brand relishes use turmeric for the yellow.

For brands that have NOT moved, the December 2027 FDA petroleum-dye phase-out is the deadline that finally forces the question. Yellow 6 is on the list.

The natural-color answer for relish-style applications usually comes down to turmeric (yellow), paprika oleoresin (orange depth), or annatto (orange-red), often blended. Each behaves differently against pickling brine, sugar content, and shelf time. The matrix work is what determines which blend actually holds.
