I noticed Good Humor had quietly pulled the artificial dyes from its orange creamsicle, which sent me down the rest of the freezer aisle.
Here is what stood out. While a lot of brands are scrambling to reformulate before 2028, some never had to. They have been clean since the first scoop.
A quick roll call for the ones who never reached for the dye bottle:
Häagen-Dazs. The OG. Real cream, milk, eggs, sugar, and no artificial colors, ever.
Jeni's Splendid. The modern classic. Clean since day one, no synthetic dyes, no shortcuts.
Straus Family Creamery. Organic, zero coloring agents.
Graeter's and McConnell's. Generations of custard-based recipes built on real ingredients instead of a color chart.
That is the quiet flex. When the whole category has to race the clock, the brands that were honest about color all along just keep making ice cream.
Orange you glad some of them never changed?
Every brand doing the reformulation work now deserves real credit. But the ones who never needed the dye in the first place have earned a scoop of recognition too.
